Member Development

Councillor to Councillor

What you think it will be like, and what it’s actually like!

The LRIP Member Development Programme is all about developing members’ skills and who better to learn from than each other.

So in this section a number of experienced councillors from across the Partnership give you the benefit of their time in office with a range of anecdotes and helpful advice on some key topics.

Their advice is in the form of video clips so we recommend you view the videos when using a broadband connection. For each topic, a text file is available to read if you can’t access the video clips.

Well I think I expected I could go in to the council offices, and people would do as I asked but it doesn’t work out like that.

I think when you first you believe that you can achieve everything and that you can do everything, and I think one of things that you have to remember when you first get elected is that you can’t please everybody and you can’t do everything.

A new councillor can expect to be very confused and very bewildered for perhaps three months or so and must speak out and say I don’t understand.

I think one of the biggest shocks a new member has actually the amount of work involved.

It’s a much broader and much wider role than I think what I first envisaged it would be.
