The LRIP Member Development Programme is all about developing members’ skills and who better to learn from than each other.
So in this section a number of experienced councillors from across the Partnership give you the benefit of their time in office with a range of anecdotes and helpful advice on some key topics.
Their advice is in the form of video clips so we recommend you view the videos when using a broadband connection. For each topic, a text file is available to read if you can’t access the video clips.
When you first get in to the council chamber or into committee is to listen, learn, listen to the councillors that have been there sometime.
And listen particularly to the way various councillors put their points in council and in committee meetings because it means a lot how you put a point over.
Learn how to use the local media, they can be very awkward when you’ve made mistakes but they can be great when you need to achieve something.
Prepare yourself properly before you going in to a meeting, be sure that you’ve read all the papers that go with that meeting, make sure you’ve check any things that you want to raise with fellow members.
Take on board all the training that is offered.
Believe in what you’re doing, be passionate about it and never forget that the people have put you there.
