The LRIP Member Development Programme is all about developing members’ skills and who better to learn from than each other.
So in this section a number of experienced councillors from across the Partnership give you the benefit of their time in office with a range of anecdotes and helpful advice on some key topics.
Their advice is in the form of video clips so we recommend you view the videos when using a broadband connection. For each topic, a text file is available to read if you can’t access the video clips.
It’s interesting to look at the way councillors are in opposition and when councillors work when they actually in control.
Sometime if you be long to majority group in a council, you can actually I think that because you’re the majority group everything is going to go your way.
If you’re in power then you have to be willing to accept responsibility.
If you are in opposition and work properly in opposition then you were a different mind-set, and that mind-set is not to be totally anti-everything but to be very selective about the things that you oppose.
You can question, you can harry, you can seek out information but at the end of the day you can probably change very little.
But a good opposition will be looking a polices, finding flaws in them, will be looking to see how those policies can be improved, will be suggesting different ways of doing things even.
If you are in opposition you need to be able to debate and put your own point of view forward, even if they don’t take it on board at least you feel better when you’ve said your piece.
