Getting things done

The LRIP Member Development Programme is all about developing members’ skills and who better to learn from than each other.

So in this section a number of experienced councillors from across the Partnership give you the benefit of their time in office with a range of anecdotes and helpful advice on some key topics.

Their advice is in the form of video clips so we recommend you view the videos when using a broadband connection. For each topic, a text file is available to read if you can’t access the video clips.

To get things done is a much slower exercise than you would normally expect in normal everyday life.

On of the difficulties is that you always want what you want to happen now.

I think certainly you need to have some sort of patience and understanding that the wheels of democracy don’t run very quickly.

And you have to develop a long-term view.

And you also have to realise that you have to get the majority of councillors behind you, because you might think it’s a good idea but unless the majority of councillors think it’s a good idea it’s not going to happen.
