The LRIP Member Development Programme is all about developing members’ skills and who better to learn from than each other.
So in this section a number of experienced councillors from across the Partnership give you the benefit of their time in office with a range of anecdotes and helpful advice on some key topics.
Their advice is in the form of video clips so we recommend you view the videos when using a broadband connection. For each topic, a text file is available to read if you can’t access the video clips.

I think the main thing about being a good councillor is to show respects for people.
A good councillor is someone who makes themselves available to the people who have elected them, and doesn’t forget that you’re only there because people have bothered to vote for you to be there.
A good councillor is someone who recognises that they have got to learn, because many of the papers you get you won’t understand.
A good councillor has to care for the community they live in, wants to improve a lot for the residents of the area they live in, and they think they can do it better than the existing councillors.
