Councillor to Councillor

A Councillor’s influence

The LRIP Member Development Programme is all about developing members’ skills and who better to learn from than each other.

So in this section a number of experienced councillors from across the Partnership give you the benefit of their time in office with a range of anecdotes and helpful advice on some key topics.

Their advice is in the form of video clips so we recommend you view the videos when using a broadband connection. For each topic, a text file is available to read if you can’t access the video clips.

I think as a councillor you hope to be able to achieve some sort of difference in the community where you are and to make the place a better for the people who put you there.

You can achieve a lot by persuasion, persuading your fellow members that the ideas you have are good ideas.

Achievement I think is dependant on your interests and what I’ve found is that the things that I’m interested in both professionally and as councillor, I’ve been able to full fill some of those roles.

You want to do what the people want but also you’re a human being. You want to achieve some things, I happen to be interested in the arts I would love for example to ensure that there was money for the theatre and that sort of thing.

Me position as lead member for young people, has meant that I’ve been able to help a group of young people achieve a skate board park.

So it’s bit of what they want but lets be honest, it’s a bit of what you would like to do and your interests.
